10 Ways to Use Your Virginia Self Storage Unit

Professional organizers say that self storage units should not be used as a depository for all the extra clutter from your home. Instead, they say, you should recycle, reuse, or throw away all of that stuff. But while self storage should not be used for hoarding all the things that you do not have time to sort out, there are efficient uses for self storage. For example, one Washington D.C. organizer is using a self storage unit to hold pairs of denim jeans that he is collecting for charity. Here are ten more ways you can use a self storage unit:

1. Store your tax records. You should keep your tax returns forever, and keep the supporting documents (such as the receipts that document your business expenses) for seven years.

2. Store your business archives. Keep your client records even for those clients who have moved on. If you must do research for a client, keep the research as well, just in case the client comes back to you later to ask you to justify decisions that you made while working on a particular assignment.

3.

Store any business inventory or supplies that you do not need to have on site.

4. Store documents and photos that have historical or sentimental value. For these items, be sure to use a climate-controlled self storage unit, which will help to protect your documents and photos from damage that might be caused by temperature and humidity variations, or insects. Use acid-free packing materials, including acid-free boxes, to store these items. Packing materials that contain acid can cause discoloration to develop in your documents and photos.

5. Store family heirlooms, especially textiles, such as old wedding dresses and quilts. Here, again, a climate-controlled self storage unit will help to keep textiles safe from variations in the weather. As with paper documents and photos, be sure to use acid-free packing materials to store textiles.

6. Store items that you use only seasonally, such as seasonal clothing, sports equipment, holiday decorations, yard tools such as a lawnmower or snowblower, etc.

7. Store items that you are saving for a family member or friend who currently does not have room for them, such as a college student who is temporarily living in a dorm room.

8. Store collections that have gotten too big for the space that you have in your home. Self storage units are especially helpful for people who collect large items, such as old cars, motorcycles, or arcade-style video games.

9. Store items that you rotate in and out of your home regularly, such as works of art, toys, or homeschooling supplies.

10. Store items that you need to keep out of the reach of children, and which you do not need access to on a regular basis, such as hunting gear (including guns and knives), or electronic gadgets that contain lithium batteries (which are extremely hazardous for children. Do NOT store anything flammable or anything that contains hazardous chemicals. Check the terms of your storage unit lease or phone your storage company manager if you have questions about what can or cannot be stored.
